Fascias, soffits and guttering, replaced in UPVC

Rotten timber fascias, sagging gutters and downpipes that discharge against the wall are the quiet cause of most damp problems on an ordinary house. J&L fits new UPVC fascias, soffits, guttering and downpipes over sound timber or replaced back to the rafter feet, in white, black, anthracite or a woodgrain finish to suit the house.

Every fascia and guttering job, covered

Back to the rafter feet where needed

Capping over rotten timber hides the problem for a couple of years and then the whole lot has to come off again. Where the boards behind are soft they get cut out and replaced before the new fascia goes on. Where they are sound, a properly fixed capping board is a perfectly good answer.

Ventilated soffits

Roof spaces need air moving through them or they get damp, and closing a soffit up solid is a common and expensive mistake. New soffits go on with continuous or disc vents to keep the loft breathing, which matters more now that lofts are insulated to modern depths.

Guttering that runs the right way

New brackets set to a proper fall, joints and unions where they belong, and outlets positioned so water actually reaches the downpipe. Half round, square or deep flow to suit the roof area, in a colour that matches the fascia rather than whatever was on the van.

Downpipes taken somewhere sensible

Downpipes fixed back to the wall properly and discharged into a gully, a soakaway or a water butt rather than onto the drive or against the brickwork. A downpipe that soaks a wall for ten years costs more to put right than the guttering ever did.

Questions

Asked and answered

How long does a full fascia and gutter job take?

A typical three bedroom semi around Horley or Crawley is one to two days with a scaffold or towers, depending on how much timber has to come out. Larger detached houses and anything with a lot of bargeboard detail run longer. It is all in the written estimate up front.

What colours can I have?

White is still the most common, but black, anthracite grey and rosewood or oak woodgrain are all readily available and popular on the newer estates around Horley, Salfords and Copthorne. Guttering, fascia, soffit and downpipes can be matched or deliberately contrasted, whichever suits the house.

Do you need scaffolding for fascias and guttering?

For a full replacement, usually yes, or at least a proper tower. Working off a ladder along a whole elevation is neither safe nor accurate, and gutter falls set from a ladder are exactly why so many gutters pool. Access is priced into the estimate.

Will you sort the bit where the gutter meets next door?

On a semi or a terrace the gutter usually runs through, and we finish neatly at the boundary with a proper stop end or union rather than leaving a gap. If your neighbour wants theirs doing at the same time it is often cheaper for both of you, since the access is already there.

Can you replace the bargeboards at the same time?

Yes, and it is normally the right time to do it. Bargeboards on the gable ends are usually the same age and condition as the fascias, and doing them together means one scaffold, one visit and a house that matches all the way round.
