Polycarbonate roofs for car ports and lean-tos

New polycarbonate sheets and glazing bars for car ports, lean-tos, canopies and covered walkways, and new timber or aluminium car port roofs built from scratch. Old yellowed sheets out, new multiwall polycarbonate in on proper glazing bars with end caps and closures, so it stays clear, stays put in the wind and sheds the rain into a gutter rather than down your neck.

What is included

Every car port roof, covered

Sheets replaced, bars checked

Old brittle or yellowed polycarbonate stripped off and replaced with new multiwall sheet in clear, opal or bronze. Glazing bars are checked and replaced where the gaskets have gone, because new sheet on tired bars lifts in the first gale.

Built to shed water

Sheets laid to a proper fall with breather tape at the bottom edge and sealed tape at the top, so condensation drains out instead of growing algae inside the flutes. End closures and a gutter at the low edge stop the drips where you park and walk.

New car port roofs from scratch

Timber or aluminium framed car port and lean-to roofs designed, built and covered. Posts set properly, the frame fixed to the house with a lead or flashing detail at the wall, and the roof covered in polycarbonate or, where you want it darker and quieter, a solid rubber or tile finish.

Conservatory and porch roofs too

Polycarbonate conservatory roofs resheeted or converted, porch canopies rebuilt and covered, and the flashing at the house wall done properly in lead rather than mastic. The same team does the roof above it, so the junction gets done once and done right.

Questions

Asked and answered

How long does polycarbonate last?

Good quality multiwall polycarbonate with a UV protected face is generally good for fifteen to twenty years before it starts to yellow and go brittle. Cheap sheet, or sheet fitted with the UV face down, can go in five. We fit it the right way up, which is a more common mistake than you would think.

Can you just replace the sheets and keep the frame?

Usually yes, if the frame and glazing bars are sound. Gaskets and end caps get replaced as a matter of course because they are cheap and they are what holds the sheet down. If the bars themselves have corroded or the timber underneath has gone soft, we will tell you before we start.

Which thickness and colour should I have?

For a car port or lean-to, 16mm or 25mm multiwall is the usual choice. Clear gives the most light, opal cuts the glare and hides the dirt, and bronze keeps a south facing space cooler. We will bring samples so you can see them against the house.

Can I have a solid roof on a car port instead?

Yes. A lot of people want the shade and the quiet of a solid roof, and a timber deck with a Firestone rubber finish, or a lightweight tile system, works well on a car port or a lean-to. The frame has to be up to the weight, which we will check first.

Do I need planning permission for a car port?

Most car ports and lean-tos at the side or rear of a house fall under permitted development if they stay within the size and height limits, but front of house, listed buildings and conservation areas are different. We will flag it if we think yours needs checking with the council.
